MORE ABOUT US

lake on the left, with the Abrahams Bosom site circled. The long straight landbank which created the lake can be seen on the right.

The site itself is quite extensive and occupies a very convenient spot adjacent to Pinewoods Holiday Park, about ¾ mile from Wells-Next-the-Sea town centre. Wells Harbour lies to the East, with the Wells Harbour Railway running just under a mile from the harbour to the beach. The Albatros is a beautiful Dutch sailing ketch with long-standing links to Wells, available for charter and well worth a visit when it's in port.

Other attractions in the area include Holkham Hall - home to the Earl and Countess of Leicester, Walsingham - a religious pilgrimage centre described as 'England's Nazareth' as well as many coastal and inland locations of interest to naturalists and bird-spotters in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

The name 'Abraham's Bosom' has a story attached...

Before the expanse of water on our site was cut off to form a saltwater lake (apparently, the only saltwater lagoon in inland Britain), it was open to the sea - a natural coastal harbour. According to local legend, in the days when cargo ships sailed into Wells, many were owned by Jewish merchants. As the sailing ships rounded the headland in choppy waters, they were always pleased to enter the safety of the bay with its calm, welcoming surface. For this reason, the Jewish merchants referred to their entry into the bay as being 'carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom', a Biblical reference about gaining entry into Paradise. The reference has 'stuck' as the name of the area long after the bay was transformed by the creation of the landbank and remains to this day.
